Celeste Headlee is a radio host who gave a really good TED talk about how to have a better conversation, summarised recently by Claire Labrum for the ICG.
Celeste's recipe for better conversations focused on honesty, brevity, clarity and (especially) on the art of listening.
Some of Celeste's top tips for interviewing people;
- Listen hard and resist the urge to talk. "Most of us don’t listen with the intent to understand, we listen with the intent to reply". (S Covey)
- 'Stay out of the weeds' - people don’t care about the details, they care about you and what you have in common
- Try not to repeat yourself
- Don't multi task, be mentally focused, be 'present' in the moment, without distraction
- Don't pontificate, listen for what you can learn from the other person.
- Don't equate your experience with theirs
- Try not to repeat yourself
- Be brief
Good lessons for life, not just for research.
